Acon Digital has officially eleased Acoustica Basic Edition, a free (but stilll quite feature-packed!) version of their Acoustica audio editor.
We released a completely free version of Acoustica called Acoustica Basic Edition today. The basic edition contains the basic editing tools available in the Acoustica Standard and Premium Edition as well as full plug-in and ASIO support.
Acoustica Basic Edition is available for free download via Acon Digital. For a feature comparison between different versions of Aoustica, click here.
Although it lacks some advanced features from the full version, the free edition seems like a pretty capable audio editor. From what I’ve noticed in the comparison chart, it hosts VST effects (real-time preview supported), supports numerous audio formats, and even comes with a phono preamp emulation for capturing old vinyl!

Interesting. This looks like it fills the gap both price and feature-wise between Audacity and Adobe Audition. It could be one of the first free alternatives to Audacity that will give users a decent way to record, say, a podcast track.
i use Wavosaur much more often than Audacity, but it can act a bit buggy when working with VSTs.
judging by the feature list the only important thing (for me, at least) lacking for Acoustica Basic Edition is batch processing. the rest looks very promising.
I’ve tried the Basic edition with some reverb and delay VSTs… it works well!
sweet! will test this tonight.
The free version doesn’t load MP3 format files.
And the comparison chart says another thing, so…
:_(
that would really suck! i’ll have to test this tonight and see if it can load MP3s.
MP3 works fine for me… I’ve definitely got the Basic (free) edition.
Weird, because i can’t load any MP3 files.
Maybe a bitrate restriction or something? :S
Lately my PC is doing strange things about MP3 files, exporting, etc…
I will check it again then. Thanks :)
I liked your Charlatan entry on OSC!
oh?! i never took part in OSC, though. :)
cool! how do you like it otherwise (compared to Wavosaur and Audacity)?
I luv Audacity, and I’ve recorded pod-casts and misc things with it. Might check this out l8tz.
Audacity is cool, but for some reason i can edit stuff a lot quicker with Wavosaur. still doing a fair amount of recording with Audacity, though.
Even the free version has VST support, so maybe it could substitute Wavosaur. I still have to test it, but I’ve already tested the demo version of the full Acoustica some time ago, and I was very happy with it.
I wouldn’t give up Audacity, because it still has some advantages, but the free Acoustica is a good addition.
