Kotkas Universe has announced that their Paax 3 Pro sampler in VSTi plugin format for Windows is now available as freeware.
Paax Pro is now available for free! Paax is a powerful VST sampler that matches many of the features of expensive samplers.
Paax 3 Pro is available for free download via Kotkas Universe (free registration and working email address required). The download server seems to be down at the moment, so I haven’t been able to download my copy yet.
I’ve never used Paax myself, but I’ve read some positive reviews about it in the past. It loads SoundFonts and AKAI S5000/6000 programs and seems like a lightweight and well organized sampler. It supports timestretching, has a built-in effects section and offers up to four individual outputs.

Pretty cool, but I just can’t get past this outdated look…
oh, i actually really liked the GUI! :D
still haven’t tried the plugin, though. can’t get the thing to download.
Thanks!
Now to work, so I can get home and play with it…
enjoy! hopefully the download server will be fixed when you return from work.
Always nice to see a new freebie but I didn’t like it at all and deleted it. It’s way too complicated and terribly clunky to use… I can’t believe BPB likes the GUI! Wait until you’ve downloaded it and tried to use it, I bet you don’t like it so much then!
ahh, well i haven’t tested the plugin yet, i just liked the screenshot. is it really that bad? i’ll have to give it a go later today.
Everything seems to take too many steps to achieve (try playing a wave sample!) and the interface is really cramped/tiny and it’s split across too many pages.
In many ways it reminds me of trying to program a hardware rack instrument, all the power is there but it’s so hard to get to it. There are so many good free samplers out there now, I just don’t think this one cuts it any more (which is possibly why the dev freed it).
damn, i was so excited when i saw this release. not so eager to test it anymore! :(
Does it use much CPU or could it be a lighter alternative to all those overloaded samplers?
not sure, i still haven’t tested it!
My best sampler loaders are: (I use them for drum hits mostly)
1st – FL FPC
2nd – Shortcircuit 2
3rd – Beat Zampler
Have a nice day :)
good list! i’d also add Poise, it’s my favorite (although not freeware) drum sampler.
Mine are
1. Shortcircuit 1
2. Shortcircuit 2 (no host automation but the best workflow)
3. Alchemy Player (for playing SFZ files)
ah yes, Alchemy Player is another great one! i prefer using Zampler atm, but AP is brilliant, too.
