Developer Calle Wilund (aka CWI Technology) has released v2.0 of TX16Wx, a freeware sampler instrument in VSTi plugin format for Windows (beta release).
The first public beta of TX16Wx 2.0 has been released on the all new website. Version 2 adds a completely new re-sizable GUI with full undo/redo and context sensitive help. It has a built-in file browser and uses drag and drop editing of content.
TX16Wx 2.0 beta is available for free download via CWI Technology (4.4MB download size, 32-bit & 64-bit VSTi plugin for Windows).
Although I generally liked the features of the original TX16Wx, I was a bit dissapointed by the workflow and never really got used to using this sampler. However, the new version seems to solve many of the workflow issues.
It comes with a built-in browser and supports drag and drop editing (very important for me, since I like loading samples quickly). There’s a vast amount of other new features, all of which are listed on the official website linked below.
CWI Technology has also announced a shareware version of this sampler (scheduled for release in late 2012), called TX16Wx Pro. It will feature built-in effects, input processing, and several other advanced features.
Anyway, I’m really looking forward to testing out the beta version. It seems like Shortcircuit 1 is finally getting some really serious competition in the freeware realm.

Very cool. Is this the first free sampler that can load both sfz and sf2?
Shortcircuit 1 can do it too:

Oh, I haven’t used it in a while and had not noticed. For some reason I always just used Shortcircuit for “simpler” sampling, never multisampled stuff. I also found Shortcircuit to be a little clunky for fast creative use, maybe just never used it enough to get comfortable with it. Anyways, just installed the TX16Wx v2 beta and it seems to work perfectly, with samples as well as sfz and sf2, drag and drop browser seems to work.
fantastic, thanks for the report!
That’s great news, I hope TX16Wx Pro can finally surpass the old Shortcircuit. I had some problems with Shortcircuit in REAPER, so I never used it again.
BTW, how good is the TX16Wx Pro compared to the Wusikstation, considered as a sampler? Does it exceed it in terms of features and functionality (and usability, of course)?
hmm… not sure how Wusikstation works actually. is it more of a sampler or a sample-based synthesizer?
It can be both…but I never used Wusikstation as a sampler, and I’m wondering if I indeed should try it or TX16Wx Pro. As TX16Wx Pro doesn’t have a FX section, Wusikstation should be better for sampling, shouldn’t it?
im happy with directwave but maybe one day il check this out since its name has been popping up in forums a lot.
oh i remember why iv heard of this, because it can record samples straight into the sampler itself.
can anyone tell me how i could go about this in FL Studio? (i have a strong feeling it wont be possible in FL)
had a go with this.
glitch: the filter takes a few seconds to react to any tweaks at all.
shame theres no FX. its in really early stages but nice look, wont be using this yet.
yeah, the final free version won’t have FX either. and i love the FX section in Shortcircuit 1!
have you tried recording directly in FL Studio?
yeh i can record no problem in my DAW, i just like the idea of recording within a sampler itself since it would be quicker to resample that way, couldn’t figure out how to do it with this though. FL isnt the best when it comes to bouncing audio/freezing tracks. yeh iv always liked shortcircuits FX too, a lot of filters and extras that are useful :)
the best thing that could happen in terms of freeware sampling would be that the guys from vemberaudio would opensource the code of shortcircuit 2 … this is a big dream of mine :)
but they might wanna use it for bitwig or any other money-generating thing …
ah, i’d love to see Shortcircuit 1 go open source, too. However, my guess is that there’s 0% chance for that happening, now that the Bitwig project is active.
Does it sound like the Yamaha 12bits sampler ?
I would love to get the 12bits grit (since the Tonebooster Timemachine is quite subtle even at 10bit and destroy in a not musical way at 8bit…)
PS : First post here (but I eat your blog everyday man, keep up)
as far as i can remember, no. the first version of TX16Wx only followed the interface design of old samplers, not the downsampling stuff.
have you tried using other bitcrushers to emulate that sound? i can highly recommend CMT bitcrusher and Delta Modulator, check them out!
Thank you, I will check them !!!!
If this thing had disk streaming and 100% support for all sfz opcodes, I’d gladly pay money for it.
Good stuff. Never tried this or shortcircuit. Looks like I will have to give these a look.
