Krakli Software has released XaKT, a freeware spectral synthesizer in VSTi plugin format for Windows.
This spectral synth is gifted at dark textures and sounds with plenty of movement. Take the time to become accustomed to its unusual interface and you will have a real beast on your hands.
XaKT is available for free download via Krakli Software (2.31MB download size, 5.67MB size on disk, 32-bit VST plugin for Windows).
If I understood the description correctly, XaKT is based on spectral modeling synthesis. Apparently, the red and green sliders in the top section of the interface are used to modify the timbre of the sound. Here’s a useful spectral synthesis tutorial by Christopher Orth.
The plugin comes bundled with a great set of presets created by Electric-Himalaya and Dimitri Schkoda.

Sounds very sound and “plain” compared to some spectral synths.
Thank you and Krakli ;)
I meant “Sounds very good” ;)
got it, thanks for the comment gLOW-x! :)
i love all of krakli’s synths cant wait to try this out :D
quick report, great synth it might end up being a favourite. bad side is the CPU usage is highest iv seen in any plugin, i dont mind as much since i recently tweaked my OS a lot but i don’t think people will be able to use many instances of this. its a clever synth that sounds clean & big which is the most important thing.
tip: if making your own patches select 1 of the presets starting with “default”, dont just open XaKT and start tweaking since its the starting preset is what seems to eat plenty of CPU (on my system anyway). tweaking the more initialised patches & this synth will be pretty lightweight. im really liking this synth for automating & the FX all sound awesome as well.
that’s a great tip man, thanks! always cool to read reports from you. :)
Very nice. Extremely rich sounding synth.
I get no output in REAPER (i.e. it doesn’t make any sounds), what have I done wrong??
ahh, i have no idea. :/
all i can say is that worked fine here in MuLab. have you tried it in some other hosts? perhaps it’s not a REAPER-specific problem on your machine.
I’ve tried it in MuLab, and it worked (and sounded) fine. I hope I can get it working in REAPER, too…
ah, i can’t be of much help then since i don’t use REAPER. perhaps it’s a SynthEdit issue? do you usually have problems with SE plugins?
No, it’s the first SE plugin with this problem, all other SE plugins are running fine in REAPER… :-(
I realllllly love this freaking plugin. i dunno if it’s a cpu issue (which it appears to be high i guess when reading other posts) but sometimes i don’t get sound! and i like to spread across the spectrum panning multiple channels of the same instrument and such so it is a pain when even just one of them isn’t doing sound.
i am using Fruity Loops.
