AXP has released CharBooster, a freeware guitar booster effect (based on tube and tape emulation models) in VST plugin format for Windows.

AXP has released a new free VST plug-in effect for Windows: CharBooster, a guitar booster effect, with a character. It allows to shape, overdrive and boost the guitar signal before hitting your favourite amplifier VST plug-in.

CharBooster is available for free download via AXP (380kB download size, 32-bit & 64-bit VST plugin format for Windows).

The plugin is designed for boosting the DI guitar signal before it hits the guitar amp sim input. It is based on 12AX7 tube and ATR-102 tape recorder emulated models.

AXP has released two more freeware plugins which may be useful for guitar players. Both of these are available on the download page linked above.

  • I tried SoftAmp GT…and found it aggressive and flat.
Especially compared to old Mokafix, Lepou sims.

I will pass on this one ;)

    • Lepou sims are amazing.

    • Right, like you haven’t even auditioned it and you’re passing judgment? Do you have the plugin called “Open-Minded”? Perhaps not. No matter — you missed the whole point anyways. What AXP has tackled head-on here — and to some extent with his earlier two plugins — is to create some ‘front-end’ stuff, gain stages, some boost, some EQing and delay to be experimented with and used before heading your signal into your freebie Lepou amp head sims.

Personally, I use more and much prefer those incredible three amp sims collectively known as S-Gear 2 to send these boost VSTs into. I find them to be the very best available currently, and this coming from a former owner of Fractal FX and ElevenRack it’s saying a lot. I still have all the Lepou free ones, too — where I began, and still used sometimes. Still, I actually prefer those Lepou amps for the heavier stuff over anything an outfit like AcmeBeerGig has made, at least so far.

These VSTs from AXP are well worth checking out. I think he’s one dev to watch currently, and I think I’ve said that before. His plugins keep getting more and more involved and interesting. This new plugin in particular is a response to all the metal players who have been whining constantly for ‘one more stage of gain,’ etc., for their amps. No matter how much OD anyone designs into their latest amp sims, someone is always whining for more distortion. It’s never enough for some, is it? As stated, with this CharBooster, AXP is tackling the issue head-on.

  • I think one can think of CharBooster as more than just a guitar booster plugin. After trying it on a full mix I am convinced that It’s fine for use as an analogue style saturation plugin. I’m not sure why the developer markets it as a “guitar booster” only. It can “boost” all kinds of signals: full mixes, vocals etcetera.

I also like the way how it’s possible to use the character section (essentially an EQ) setting the amount of the desired frequency curve.

A bit strange: the output and input meters are in different scales, which is probably a fine thing when using it purposely as a guitar booster, but it’s a bit confusing initially.

    • Hey, Synthie — some insightful observations there. For this plugin, Alexander zeroed in on the preamp gain stage issue that continues, particularly among the metal crowd. I agree that his VSTs can qualify as more general service saturation devices, which I think is a real plus. In this plugin you can almost see him thinking out loud about what needs doing on the front of all these more complex and established larger amp sims to satisfy the ‘one more stage’ need. Still, no matter how overdriven each new major amp release is, on YouTube and in RealWorld the first thing players do is slap a boost on the front end of it. I expect this will continue. What I’m really more interested in is, What will he produce next? Three plugins in as many months, and I think he’s going to keep at it a while longer. And each one shows up with more stuff and newer options, so at some point I’m hoping he designs the perfect front-end amp plugin — and I think it’s possible he just might nail it.
