AXP has released SoftDrive GV, a freeware VST plugin for Windows which emulates the Guv’nor guitar distortion pedal by Marshall.

SoftDrive GV is a virtual-analog model of the Marshall “Guv’nor” and “Guv’nor GV-2 Plus” guitar distortion effects. The Guv’nor is a solid-state distortion pedal first issued in 1989 to recreate the sound of a cranked up Marshall stack in a small stomp-box format.

SoftDrive GV is available for free download via AXP (1.2MB download size, 32-bit & 64-bit VST plugin format for Windows).

The plugin is a model of the Marshall Guv’nor distortion pedal (it also emulates the Guv’nor GV-2 Plus version). It emulates both the amp and ToneStack stages of the original effect pedal. SoftDrive GV features 8x oversampling in older to reduce the aliasing.

The original release was on September 3rd, but the developer has released an update since then (labeled v1.0.1) which fixes a problem which occured when multiple instances of the plugin were loaded. Make sure you check out the Projects section on AXP’s website if you’re looking for more freeware VST effects!

Here’s a short demo video showing the original Marshall Guv’nor guitar distortion pedal in action:
