Free Moog Sub Phatty Ableton Live Pack Released By Francis Prève

Francis Prève has released Sub Phatty 8-Pack, a collection of Ableton Live instrument patches featuring the sounds of the Moog Sub Phatty hardware analogue synthesizer.

Since I’ve been using the Sub Phatty for close to a year, I figured it was time for another round of Moog-based Simpler patches. Because the Multidrive is so unique and the extra sub-oscillator adds textural complexity, I focused on those for this pack.

Sub Phatty 8-Pack is available for free download via Francis Prève’s website (6.6 MB download size, ZIP archive, contains 8 instrument patches in ALS format, 8 audio samples in 24-bit WAV format).

The download pack includes 8 instrument patches for the Simpler virtual instrument in Ableton Live. The patches are based on one shot samples of the Sub Phatty analogue synthesizer, including several nice sounding bass and lead patches. The included sounds are aggressive and gritty, and although I liked the sounds it would definitely be better if more than one note was sampled per patch.

People who don’t use Live can utilise the provided samples in any sampler capable of loading WAV files. Although there are only 8 samples in the download pack, they can definitely be used as a solid foundation for sculpting your own sounds. If you’re looking for a capable freeware sampler for working with samples such as these, take a look at our free sampler round-up article. My personal favorite is Shortcircuit 1, an incredible piece of freeware which should suit all of your sampling needs!

If you liked the Sub Phatty 8-Pack collection, browse the rest of Francis Prève’s website for more Ableton Live goodies. He has sampled several interesting hardware synthesizers and converted them for use with Ableton’s flagship DAW.

Finally, here’s a nice video overview of the original instrument provided by the Sonic State channel:
