KVR Audio member bchrisb has released Abstractor, a freeware virtual hybrid synthesizer in VSTi plugin format for Windows based audio hosts.

Hey everybody, here is the final version of my synthesizer Abstractor. I took the feedback from the beta and made some adjustments.

Abstractor is available for free download via KVR Audio (3.6 MB download size, DLL/EXE file, 32-bit VSTi plugin format for Windows, made with SynthMaker).

This virtual instrument combines several synthesis methods into one unique VSTi plugin. Mixing additive, FM and AM synthesis under one hood, Abstractor is pretty much a unique offering on the freeware plugin scene.

Abstractor also features a cool FTT waveform generator with a built-in LFO and two step sequencers for those nice afternoon synthesizer jams. Further extending the list of features are a handy XY pad for modulation of several parameters at the same time, and a standard analog style filter module.

I must also mention the factory sound bank which contains 110 presets of very decent quality. During the testing of Abstractor before writing this article, I was able to get some great sounding metallic tones out of it, as well as some nice clean pads and bell sounds. It also works well for synthesizing weird SFX and noises. My only issue was the interface which was a bit hard for me to figure out at first.

Basically, if you’re looking for a new FM synthesizer to add to your arsenal, you should definitely check this one out. Chances are it won’t disappoint you, unless you prefer instruments with cleaner interfaces. For even more freeware alternatives when it comes to FM synthesis, take a look at our FM synthesizer round-up which is linked above in this article.

I just wanted to say that your synths are probably the best sounding that I’ve heard coming out of the synthmaker scene.

Did you still work in the field of DSP and synths? I still have the freebies you released and I hope the internet will maintain them for a long time.

Your additive and FM work are right on the money. Don’t stop, there aren’t enough developers keeping that torch burning.
