Audio Assault has announced the release of Klipfreak, a simple free clipper effect in VST/AU/RTAS plugin formats for Windows and Mac based digital audio workstations.
There isn’t too much info available on the download page, apart from a short sentence which says “this is a clipper effect”. So yeah, thanks for the explanation! :)
Anyways, Audio Assault has recently released a great looking guitar amp suite which also featured a free guitar amp. I’ve tested the free amplifier plugin on my machine and it sounded pretty good for use in metal and rock. It was a stable plugin and it performed well on my machine.
So, my guess is that Klipfreak should turn out to be a solid plugin, too. After all, the developer already has a suite of pretty good guitar amp simulations in their portfolio.
Unfortunately, I’m not at my home studio at the moment, so I can’t put Klipfreak on a short test before writing the article as I usually do. Judging by the screenshot, this is a rather simple effect which serves the purpose of a clipper. Basically, the Input and Clip parameters control the amount of clipping which occurs, while the Output setting controls the volume of the processed audio signal.
People often talk about compressors and limiters in terms of dynamic processing, but clippers are actually awesome little tools to control the dynamics. You wouldn’t necessarily use them on lush vocals, of course, but things like bass and drums can sound great with a bit of clipping and this way you can also tame the peaks quite a bit.

IMHO, every software studio needs to have at least one clipper and Klipfreak seems like it could be a solid candidate for this purpose. Please leave a comment and let me know what you think a about Klipfreak before I get to test it myself!
