WOK has announced the release of VVOC-1, a free formant synthesizer VSTi plugin for Windows which is designed for generating synthetic choir sounds and vocal pads.

VVOC-1 generates vocal sounds with a vintage electronic touch. Good for synthetic choir sounds. The integrated BBD chorus and the X/Y pad for selecting the formants, a pitch glide function and a hidden secret unveil more power than the easy GUI might imply.

Although WOK’s fantastic One Trick Pony series of freeware plugins has ended for the time being, his new VVOC-1 formant synthesizer follows the same philosophy of avoiding bloat and keeping software clean and functional. This is a great approach to plugin development in my opinion, as it’s always nice to keep a library of instruments and effects which are optimized for handling a specific task.

The instrument is designed for creating artificial choir sounds reminiscent of 80s hybrid synthesizers, and it does its job rather well. You can also use it to create synthetic vocal leads, which sound very nice when the Glide parameter is dialed in properly.

The plugin features two formant oscillators, paired up with a white noise generator and a built-in chorus effect which thickens the sound of the instrument. A simple AR envelope and LFO can modulate the sound even further. Finally, a handy XY pad can be used to tweak multiple plugin parameters at the same time, making VVOC an interesting performance synthesizer.

The plugin can be downloaded for free from the developer’s website linked below. To install the plugin on your machine, simply copy the provided DLL file to your VST plugin folder.
