Squashit by Klevgränd Produktion.

Klevgränd Produktion has announced the release of Squashit, a slick freeware multi-band distortion effect for Mac and iOS devices (the iOS version comes with a $0.99 price tag).

SquashIt is a multi-band distortion effect available for iPad and as an Audio Unit (Mac). The effect has proven to work very well with vocals and bass.

Every once in a while, a day comes when the Mac crowd gets an awesome freebie and us Windows based users are left empty handed. We do have some freeware alternatives for this kind of effect on Windows, but definitely not as polished as Squashit. Distort3r comes to mind, but that one’s reserved for the Ableton crowd.

Obviously, I can’t test Squashit on my Windows machine, however the demo video embedded below shows the effect in action. What really caught my eye is the user interface. It’s so easy to control this device and defining the frequency bands is super simple. It also looks super slick, the interface is just beautiful.

Dear readers, if you know of a decent freeware multi-band distortion VST for Windows, please let me know in the comments section below! What I usually do in order to achieve this effect is to make a copy of an audio track, taking away all the frequencies which I don’t want to distort and then adding some distortion using a regular distortion effect. It would be neat to have a polished free Windows plugin which could do this without need for parallel processing.

To grab your free copy of Squashit, you’ll need to submit a working email address on the product page linked below. The download link will be delivered to you via email.

  1. I Just found a 32 bit windows VST called TriDirt. I haven’t tried it yet, but it has good reviews! Here’s the description:

TriDirt is a stereo 3 band distortion plugin.

Adjustable crossover frequencies with linked knobs
7 different waveshapers for variety of sounds
Post filtering option (PF) applies low pass filtering at first and second band
Balance control applied before waveshaping for wide stereo effects
All bands and post filtering don’t use processing power when inactive

It was apparently was made by Noizware, but their website is down and has been for a quite a while.
