Ministepper by WOK.

WOK has announced the release of Ministepper, a freeware MIDI step sequencer in VST plugin format for Windows which is a lightweight version of the commercial Midistepper plugin by the same developer.

MINISTEPPER is an easy to use step sequencer VST plugin for Windows. It features 8 steps, each with adjustable velocity, gate length and mute.

Although this plugin hasn’t been released as a part of WOK’s fantastic One Trick Pony plugin series (which is sadly over, but you can still check out those plugins by clicking here), it shares the same streamlined and bloat-free philosophy. Ministepper is a simple but effective 8-step MIDI sequencer which can be used to send MIDI note messages to virtual or even real-world instruments.

Each step comes with adjustable gate length and velocity and it’s also possible to transpose the entire sequence using incoming MIDI notes. Other features include swing, different play directions, triggering via MIDI note key-presses and host sync.  The plugin is also capable of playing chords if you send chords to it via MIDI.

As I’ve already mentioned, Ministepper is actually a lightweight freeware version of the more powerful Midistepper plugin by WOK. The commercial version of the plugin is priced at €16 and it features step-divide, along with larger a 16-step sequencer as opposed to the 8 steps found in the freeware version.

Do you use third party step sequencers in your DAW? Although I use the built-in piano roll for MIDI sequencing 99% of the time, I still find that step sequencers such as this one are a nice source of inspiration when coming up with new riffs and a cool way to refresh my workflow from time to time.

Ministepper is available for free download via WOK (3.1 MB download size, ZIP archive, 32-bit VST plugin format for Windows, made with SynthEdit).
