XSRDO has released an updated version of the XSRDO Patchwork Modular System freeware virtual modular synthesizer in VSTi plugin format for Windows based plugin hosts and digital audio workstations.
The instrument is described as a “true modular synthesizer” in a sense that its architecture is actually modular and not “just a simple fixed synthesizer where the modulation matrix has been replaced by fancy graphic lines”.
Although there are several other truly modular VSTi plugins out there (Bazille by U-He and Sonigen Modular, for example), I really appreciate the clean looks and simple architecture of XSRDO Patchwork Modular System. Not saying that the instrument is simple, but I find it quite a bit easier to use than some of the other alternatives out there. This is definitely a big plus for people who are looking for a freeware tool to help them make their first steps in the world of modular synthesizers.
The instrument features 30 different modules which can be inserted into 16 available racks. You’re free to experiment with different kinds of module combinations and you can trigger the synthesizer using the built-in analog style step sequencer. The instrument also features a very useful waveform editor.
The download is hosted on an external file hosting provider, so you’ll probably want to de-select the “use our download manager and get recommended downloads” option before hitting the download button. This way you will only download the ZIP archive which contains the VSTi plugin without any additional stuff.

UPDATE: Several users have reported GUI issues with the latest version of the plugin. The GUI is not loading in some hosts. The developer is currently working on a fix for this issue! If the GUI doesn’t load in your host, you should download the previous version of the plugin.

onYeah, I’ve experienced the GUI issue in Reaper and Cubase and had already lost interest because of that but I’m gonna try the suggested previous version later…

onYeah, it’s really sad that the updated version has these issues. You should definitely take a look at the older version linked in the article if you want to try this one out. I think that you won’t regret it!
Hopefully, the developer will release another update soon.

onRunning V1.8 (Love and Chocolate) on Tracktion 5(32) and it runs perfectly. Very well behaved and it was as simple as dragging it’s folder to my 32 bit VSTi folder, launching Tracktion and scanning for new VSTi’s. Tracktion found it and seems to runs it very nicely. The latest one is huge. It’s going to take me ages to figure out what all this stuff does (60 modules, holy crap)
