Collected Transients Announces MaK LITE For NI Kontakt

3

Collected Transients has announced the release of MaK LITE, a free foley sample library for Native Instruments Kontakt featuring a collection of computer mouse and keyboard sounds.

The free MaK LITE sound library offers two multi-sampled input devices instead of fifteen found in the commercial version of the product. The free version only features a set of laptop keyboard and touchpad sounds that were sampled from an early 2008 MacBook Pro laptop. There are no other limitations, though, meaning that the freebie pack provides the same level of quality as the full product, although with less variety in terms of available input devices.

Speaking of quality, MaK LITE features 160 multi-samples per device (320 samples in total) with five velocity layers and 16 round robin variations per sample. Both keyboard press and release samples are included. The interface is based on a custom Kontakt script which provides some useful additional features such as automatic release sample triggering and “fat fingers” emulation (triggering multiple samples at once). The instrument is well-scripted and getting a natural sounding typing performance out of it is as easy as repeatedly pressing a single note on the MIDI keyboard. Round robin works great and there are enough RR variations included to prevent any duplicate samples being triggered in succession.

Fortunately for people who don’t own the full version of Kontakt, the samples are provided as uncompressed WAV files which can be loaded in virtually any sampler instrument and digital audio workstation. The only major drawback in this case is that the mappings will need to be created manually by the user. Owners of the full version of Kontakt can take advantage of the custom user interface and pre-made mappings.

The library is distributed as a RAR archive that can be downloaded after a simple checkout procedure on the Collected Transients website. An email address is required, however signing up for the email newsletter is not obligatory.

  1. Has the search for innovation in music software come to this? A commercial sample library made up of laptop keyboard clicks? With all due respect to the developer, this seems like a novelty at best. Maybe I’m being a stick in the mud, but “five velocity layers and 16 round robin variations” of someone pressing a Tab key on a laptop? Really?

Hi Dean! I’m Stosh, the guy who made this library. Thanks for the feedback.

Maybe you’re looking at this library different than what it was designed for: Foley

The idea is if you’re working on a film/commercial/game/etc where someone is typing on a keyboard, this is a quick substitute to actually manually recording or cutting in keyboard SFX. It might seem a bit overboard if you have musical intentions, but in the post production world it’s (hopefully) just what you need! ;)

Also, thanks for sharing this, Tomislav! BPB has been such a great resource for me!
