Richard Devine Releases Montana Ringing Rocks Field Recordings

1

Richard Devine has released a free sound collection titled Field Recordings of the Mysterious Ringing Rocks/Montana, featuring 77 individual WAV samples and a Kontakt 5 instrument patch.

The sounds were recorded at a unique rock formation near Butte, Montana. These rocks tend to chime melodically when tapped with a mallet, producing a lovely, almost bell-like sound. Strangely enough, once one of these rocks is removed from the formation, it no longer rings. But let’s leave that one to the scientists and focus on the sound library at hand.

Richard used a Sony PCM-D100 portable recorder to capture these sounds, ending up with 77 individual WAV files (24-bit/96 kHz) in the final product. Apart from the included samples which can be used in any WAV compatible DAW or sampler instrument, the library also includes a simple NKI patch that was designed for use with Native Instruments Kontakt 5. The full version of NI Kontakt is required in order to avoid the demo mode limitations of Kontakt Player.

If you like the idea of using “real world” sounds in your music and sound design projects, then you definitely shouldn’t miss the opportunity to download this sound library for free. It can be downloaded directly from the SoundCloud page linked below, no signup or registration required.

The library is available for free download via SoundCloud (22.8 MB download size, ZIP archive, contains 77 field recordings in 24-bit WAV format, 1 NKI patch for Native Instruments Kontakt 5).
