Free DSI OB-6 Sample Library Released By Dani Karanyi

Hungarian music producer and composer Dani Karanyi has released Monday Synth, a free Dave Smith Instruments OB-6 synthesizer sample library for Native Instruments Kontakt 5.

Monday Synth is compatible with Kontakt 5 only, although it will also work for 15 minutes in the free Kontakt Player. Individual samples are not included (only a monolith NKI file is provided), meaning that the library can’t be used in any other sampler instruments apart from Kontakt. Since the included NKI patch doesn’t feature a custom user interface, it is not quite clear why the author has decided to limit the library for use with NI Kontakt only, so here’s hoping that we’ll see a WAV or SFZ version of Monday Synth in the future.

The great thing about this library, though, is the fact that the author has sampled every note across eight octaves, with three velocity layers per note. The result is an impressive sounding analog synth patch for NI Kontakt, with hardly any audible sampling artifacts. The difference in sound between the different velocity layers is a bit too drastic for my taste, but this could actually work well in certain types of projects.

Again, my biggest gripe with Monday Synth is the fact that only a monolith NKI patch is provided, which severely limits the versatility of this otherwise fairly well done sampling project. Kontakt users will have the option to open the instrument editor and tinker with the samples under the hood, but having the WAV samples included in the pack would open this rather nice sounding DSI OB-6 sample library to an even wider audience.

Monday Synth is available for free download via Dani Karanyi’s website (112 MB download size, ZIP archive, contains 1 instrument patch in NKI format for NI Kontakt 5).
