Free Wonky Tape Atari Released By Synth Magic

Synth Magic has introduced Wonky Tape Atari, a free Atari gaming console sample library for Native Instruments Kontakt 5 and WAV compatible sampler instruments.

Wonky Tape Atari is a collection of sound effects and instruments that were sampled from the old Atari 2600 gaming console to a vintage Teac reel to reel tape and then converted into a free NI Kontakt 5 sound library. Synth Magic has included a fairly large collection of drum hits and sound effects from a variety of Atari 2600 video games, along with a smaller set of sampled instruments (one sample per instrument, no multi-samples included).

The provided Kontakt 5 patch comes with a custom user interface which works really well for manipulating the included samples on the fly. The interface features a patch browser (for loading different samples as oscillator waveforms), a pair of ADSR envelopes, a filter and a handy FX section with built-in reverb, delay, saturation and bitcrusher effects.

Apart from the NKI patch for NI Kontakt 5, the download pack also includes a set of individual WAV files which can be used in any sampler instrument or digital audio workstation. There’s a total of 78 audio samples in the pack, provided as 16-bit quality WAV files. They are clearly labeled, so creating custom patches for your sampler of choice won’t be a difficult task.

If you’re a fan of old school chip noises and lo-fi sounds, there’s no doubt that you’ll put the Wonky Tape Atari sound library to good use. The included 8-bit sound effects are loads of fun, but I also loved the sampled instruments and sequences. My “quick test” of the library turned into an hour long jam session during which I recorded a couple of ideas for future projects. Definitely a recommended download for 8-bit sound fans!

Wonky Tape Atari is available for free download via MediaFire (direct download link provided by Synth Magic, 27.7 MB download size, ZIP archive, contains 1 instrument patch in NKI format for NI Kontakt 5, 78 audio samples in 16-bit WAV format).

  1. Nice! But they really, really should slant the font on that front angled wood panel, so all the perspective angles match (to maintain the 3D look), and maybe turn that velocity knob into a horizontal slider, so it can be designed into that angled panel. Or maybe I’m just being picky because the rest of the UI is so well done! Lookin’ forward to trying it out…
