KlangLabs Releases Free OverDubber 2 Delay VST Plugin

KlangLabs has introduced OverDubber 2, an updated version of their freeware dub delay effect in 32-bit VST plugin format for Windows (made with SynthEdit).

OverDubber 2 was designed for achieving dub style delay effects, with distorted and wobbly tails and long feedback times. Compared to its predecessor, the new version of OverDubber introduces quite a few useful improvements, such as the pitch shifting module, a bitcrusher, a brand new multi-mode filter and an emulated reel control (for increasing or decreasing the pitch of the delayed signal).

Although it is essentially just a stereo delay effect, the added features make OverDubber 2 quite a unique offering on the freeware market. Having the stereo pitch LFO and a bitcrusher placed in the feedback loop makes it capable of generating some rather unique sounding delays, which can be further enhanced using the built-in filters. The limiter prevents the delayed signal from getting too loud, which is very handy if you’re using the plugin during a live performance.

One of the coolest features in OverDubber 2, though, is the Explode button which instantly pushes the feedback parameter to its maximum setting. Pressing the same button again reduces the feedback to the initial value. This is a great way to use extreme feedback as a special effect, with the ability to switch it off immediately if things go out of control.

Unfortunately, OverDubber 2 does have some problems as well. Most importantly, the performance isn’t quite stable and I’ve experienced a fair share of clicking noises and CPU spikes while testing. I wasn’t able to pinpoint exactly what’s causing these bugs, but it usually happens when the feedback parameter is pushed towards its highest setting. Hopefully, a future update will fix these issues, as OverDubber 2 is a pretty cool delay effect otherwise.
