Ivory Wind By Embertone Is Now Free (NKI/WAV)

Embertone has announced that the Ivory Wind sample library for NI Kontakt 4.2.4 and higher is now available as a free download from their website.

Ivory Wind features the sounds of an 80 year old tenor recorder that was crafted from real wood and ivory. The library was priced at $10 when it was first released back in 2012. It is now available as a completely free download from Embertone’s website, compatible with NI Kontakt and all sampler instruments capable of loading WAV files (click here to check out our list of the best freeware samplers).

The included Kontakt instrument patch features a practical and easy to use interface, packed in an overall nice looking GUI. There are only a few controls to play around with, namely the mono/poly switch, along with a couple of on/off switches for the round robin functionality (3x neighbor borrowing RR) and the built-in reverb. The instrument sounds very natural and works rather well in both mono and poly modes. Performing an authentic sounding recording solo is quite easy and intuitive, with surprisingly well sounding legato and well implemented vibrato controls (mod wheel controls the intensity, while the pitch wheel controls the speed of the vibrato effect).

Great news for non-Kontakt users is the fact that the WAV files are also included, so building your own custom patches for other samples is definitely doable task. It will take some time and skill, of course, however having access to a set of WAV samples which are neatly organized and labeled by note range will certainly help. The instrument can also be used in the freeware Kontakt Player with a standard 15-minute time limit.
