Tonespace v2.0 is an advanced freeware virtual keyboard and chord generator for Windows, Mac and Linux. It is available as a VST or Audio Unit plugin and also as a standalone program with a built-in synth.

Tonespace may be thought of as a different, more intuitive, music keyboard, combined with a chorder. It automatically generates chords to MIDI-out while you move the mouse around in a grid-like space – great for slow IDM chord pads. Or try the blues scale with your bass rhythm track of choice for some “sweet jamming”. It can also be used as an educational tool for anybody wishing to learn about scales, keys and chords.

You can learn how musical scales and keys work, and how chords relate to these, using the simple octave-based spaces. Visually discover how chords map onto surprisingly simple geometric shapes in the more advanced spaces. Use the chord-generation algorithm to generate chords from these simple shapes in the advanced spaces

People often argue if using chord generators like this one is “musical cheating”. In my opinion, it is not. It’s simply an alternative way of relying on musical theory.

And I also see it as not more like cheating than, for example, using synth patches made by other people, or the way people are using samples in dnb and hip hop music. It is something that you have to build upon, give it your own touch to make it sound worthwile. Therefore it simply becomes a part of your music creation process.

Chord generators and arpegiators of course help the producers a lot but there are a lot more things involve in a great music production.

For me “musical cheating” does not exist, these are only new roads and lines of creation and musical creativity…

I have to say that I tried the software and works pretty good!

    Thanks for the info guys!
