Odo Synths has released Dream 64 V2, an updated version of their fantastic SID chip inspired synthesizer in VSTi plugin format for Windows.

Dream 64 is not a SID emulator, just a plugin that can recreate sounds that are used in chip-music. It’s inspired by the SID chip from the old but good Commodore 64, of course with some extra features added for fun.

Dream 64 V2 is available for free download via Odo Synths (1.1 MB download size, RAR archive, 32-bit VSTi plugin format for Windows, made with SynthEdit).

This is the first public release by Odo Synths in quite a while! The same developer has released several chiptune instruments in the past, but this is the best one so far in my opinion.

While Dream 64 V2 is not an exact emulation of the Commodore 64 sound chip in terms of sound properties and filter modeling, it does bring some amazing functionality which is not often found in freeware chiptune instruments. For example, it features a powerful wavetable editor which makes it possible to create classic C64 style arpeggios and drum sounds.

The interface is clean and not too hard to comprehend and the sound can get quite close to the original when properly programmed. The included factory presets offer a great collection of sounds, from classic C64 lead and bass patches to SFX and super fast arpeggios.
