de la Mancha has announced that his previously commercial unstable random pitch modulation VST plugin for Windows is now re-released as freeware.
unstable likes to mess around with your audio pitch, with 3 subtle pitch modulation modes to simulate the unpredictable but lovable pitch instability of an old tape machine or an analogue synth.
The plugin was designed to emulate the instability of old playback systems like audio cassette decks and vinyl record players. It can also be used to simulate subtle pitch drift often heard in analogue synthesizers.
The settings can also be pushed to extremes, turning this otherwise subtle pitch modulator into an insane warbling machine. Increase the modulation level knob and listen carefully as your audio track turns into a brainless 5 AM Saturday morning version of itself.
unstable features three different modes for generating random pitch instability:
- Buzz – fuzzy modulation
- Wobble – jerky modulation
- Drift – gentle modulation
Basically, the Drift mode will work best if you’re trying to emulate the subtle VCO drift of an analogue synthesizer. The other two modes lead to more obvious pitch modulation, like the sort of stuff you hear on those really old VHS tapes which have been played hundreds of times. The plugin sounds great when used in tandem with an equalizer – remove some of the top and and boost the lows to emulate the boominess of old tapes.
unstable was originally released as a commercial plugin. It was priced at $8 when it was released way back in 2008 (as seen on Rekkerd).
It is now re-released as 100% freeware, following several amazing “payware turning freeware” releases by de la Mancha from last year. His brilliant sixtyfive compressor (also a commercial product originally) took the 5th place on our round-up of the best VST freebies from 2013.
