MPC60 vs VolcaBeats is a brand new free sample pack by Goldbaby, featuring a mash-up of the relatively fresh Korg Volca Beats analog drum machine and the relatively vintage Akai MPC60 drum sampler (yeah I know, it’s all very relative nowadays!).
When it comes to manufacturing drum sample libraries out of classic drum machines and analog gear, it’s safe to say that Goldbaby’s work has reached legendary status. His amazing Tape808 sample collection is often regarded as the single best Roland TR-808 sample pack around and it is just one of the many examples of Goldbaby’s top notch sampling skills. With that in mind, getting a free sample pack from GB is always a huge deal!

The latest free offering from GB headquarters brings a rather interesting combo. Korg Volca Beats is an affordable analog drum machine which is mostly known for its low price and high portability. It is not the fattest sounding drum machine out there, but it does offer a pretty neat mixture of classic analog drum sounds and some modern glitch effects. This modern analog drum instrument was paired up with the old MPC60 sampler, sought after for its classic 12-bit sampler character.
The pack contains 89 drum samples in total, with various variations of the Volca Beats kicks, snares, hats and other percussive sounds. It’s quite interesting to hear how much a drum sound can be changed when it’s processed with the MPC60. The included samples range from almost 100% clean to super processed and almost over-the-top saturated. As always, using these sounds is tons of fun and I recommend this sample pack to anyone who loves collecting drum samples from different drum machine samples. I can never have enough of these!
