bx_opto Pedal Optical Compressor Is Free Until July 22nd!

Brainworx have announced that their new bx_opto Pedal optical compressor effect VST/AU/RTAS/AAX plugin ($49 value) can be registered completely free of charge via Plugin Alliance until July 22nd.

bx_opto Pedal is based on the same optical compression model as the one featured in the much more expensive bx_opto compressor ($149), although with a limited set of user controllable parameters. In comparison to bx_opto, the (currently free) lightweight bx_opto Pedal version of the plugin lacks the side-chain input and the accompanying circuit, the mix knob which is essential for a hassle free NY compression setup, and the gain reduction display.

The plugin does work very well on most signal types and it is extremely easy to use, reminding me quite a bit of the excellent DC1A compressor by Klanghelm. bx_opto Pedal adapts to the characteristics of the processed audio signal, so it’s possible to dial in a great sounding compression setting in just a few mouse clicks. It is equally good as a brutal drum loop smasher and a gentle vocal leveler. As I’ve mentioned numerous times before, I’m a huge fan of simple and easy to use plugins, so in that regard bx_opto Pedal is right up my alley.

To claim your free copy of bx_opto Pedal, visit the KVR Audio page linked in the downloads section below and follow the instructions. You will need to register for a free Plugin Alliance user account and go through the basic checkout process. The coupon code for bx_opto Pedal should be added to your order automatically if you follow the link on the KVR Audio page.

Once you’ve registered your bx_opto Pedal license, you’ll be able to keep the plugin installed on up to three different machines simultaneously. On the downside, you will need to download and install the Plugin Alliance license manager, which (although it is not as annoying as some other license manager applications) is required in order to activate bx_opto Pedal on your machine. The installation and activation procedure is fully explained here.

Is bx_opto Pedal worth the registration and activation hassle? If you’re happy with your current compressor arsenal and don’t want to bother with installing additional license management software on your machine, you’re probably safe to skip this one. If, on the other hand, you’re still looking for that perfect compressor plugin to power up your DAW, then my suggestion is to grab bx_opto Pedal while it’s still free (until July 22nd) and give it a go. It’s certainly among the better compressor plugins out there.

  1. That’s a cool freebie! FYI I didn’t installed the Plugin Alliance license manager, only extracted the .dll from the archive using Universal Extractor and activated it online through the plugin’s GUI.
