Samples From Mars has announced that their DX From Mars sample library (normally priced at $39) is being offered as a free download throughout August.
Based on the iconic sounds of the Oberheim DX drum machine, DX From Mars is a fully featured sound library for NI Kontakt 5, NI Maschine, Ableton Live, Apple Logic and all WAV compatible sampler instruments. In standard Samples From Mars fashion, the included drum machine samples were re-sampled from tape and they sound excellent.
The Kontakt version comes with a custom user interface which includes four tone controls, drum triggers, an awesome step sequencer and a selection of built-in effects. Please note that the full version of NI Kontakt 5 is required in order to use the provided Kontakt patches without Kontakt Player’s demo limitations.
The highlight of the included Kontakt instrument for me is the step sequencer. It’s easy to program and it can store a number of custom sequence presets for later use. Shuffling and note accents are also supported, which is awesome and true to the original instrument as well.
The included WAV samples, on the other hand, can be used in pretty much any sampler on the market (here are some of the best freeware samplers for your to choose from). Both the WAV and Kontakt versions of the library are included in the download, along with Maschine, Ableton Live and Logic presets.
In order to download your free copy of the DX From Mars sample library, you’ll need to submit your name and email address on the product page linked below. The confirmation email and download link did take some time before reaching my inbox (about half an hour or so), though, most probably due to the heavy load that Samples From Mars are coping with at the moment (the download speed is also very low).
