Tek’it Audio has introduced MScontrol, a freeware mid-side controller utility available in VST, VST3, and AU plugin formats for 32-bit and 64-bit host applications on PC and Mac.
MScontrol is a capable mid-side processing utility featuring M/S encoding and decoding (converting a stereo signal into its mid-side components and vice versa), as well as an “onboard” mode which can be used to fine tune an existing mid-side signal and convert it back to stereo. The features are packed in a conveniently sized (although non-resizable), modern looking user interface which also comes with a built-in preset manager, undo/redo functionality, and full MIDI automation.
The M/S processing controls are pretty much self-explanatory, so let’s just mention that the user can mute, phase flip, pan, and adjust the volume of the mid and side channels separately. It is also possible to swap the two channels and bypass the plugin completely, if required. A handy peak meter is included on the right for monitoring the L/R and M/S output levels. It’s also worth noting that MScontrol features zero latency 64-bit internal processing, which is always good to know if your DAW doesn’t support automatic latency compensation.
MScontrol is one of the better M/S processing VST plugins around, although it doesn’t offer any significant improvements over some of the older options such as Voxengo’s excellent MSED effect. Still, it’s worth checking out if you’re on a lookout for a decent mid-side utility. Another solid choice in this category is the recently released TrackControl channel strip by DMG Audio which features mid-side processing and several other convenient features.

It did take a while for the plugin download to arrive after submitting my email address, though, so be prepared for a bit of waiting.
