HY-Plugins has released HY-SEQ16x3v2, an analog-style step sequencer in VST and AU plugin formats for PC and Mac. The plugin is offered in free ($0) and paid ($40) editions.

HY-SEQ16x3v2 is an updated iteration of the HY-SEQ16x3 plugin which was our #1 pick in the “Best Free Utility VST Plugin” category last year. The new version comes with a couple of new features and several GUI/workflow enhancements. As before, the basic single-lane version of the plugin is available completely free of charge. The full version features three sequencer lanes, it costs $40 and adds a couple of features which aren’t included in the free version.

Let’s take a look at the free version of HY-SEQ16v2 first. Compared to the old version of the plugin, the free edition now makes it possible to choose a custom scale and adds the option of duplicating step values. The sequence can also be transposed. As for the user interface, it is now based on Open GL rendering for better performance and allows the user to change the base interface color.

All of the features and improvements listed above are now also included in the paid version of the plugin, along with the new clock curve feature (for changing the tempo of the sequence on the fly) and an array of modulation engines (LFO, Drawable LFO, Probability-based LFO, Step LFO, Sample & Hold). The modulation engines are used to modulate various sequencer parameters, making it easier to create evolving sequences which don’t sound static.

The product is compatible with all VST and AU plugin hosts on PC and Mac. As is always the case with HY-Plugins software, you can choose between automatic and manual installation. If you’re looking for a capable step sequencer to boost your DAW’s sequencing capabilities, this one is highly recommended.

HY-SEQ16x3v2 is available for free download via HY-Plugins (4.1 MB download size, ZIP archive, 32-bit & 64-bit VST/AU plugin format for Windows & MacOS).
