SampleScience Releases Free Oberom Virtual Instrument

4

SampleScience has released Oberom, a freeware sample-based virtual instrument featuring the sounds of the Oberon virtual synthesizer by Land of Cockaigne.

Oberom is a sample-based virtual instrument in VST, VST3, and AU plugin format for digital audio workstations on PC and Mac. It is based on a set of multi-samples captured from Oberon, an old virtual synthesizer developed by Land of Cockaigne. The original instrument is no longer available. It was a dual oscillator subtractive synthesizer which attempted to emulate old analog polyphonic synthesizers.

SampleScience has included sixteen different multi-sampled presets from Oberon. The provided sounds can be customized using Oberom’s built-in ADSR envelope, LFO, and glide control parameters. The instrument also features a reverb effect. Due to its simple user interface, Oberom is easy to operate but it is not a very versatile instrument. That said, producers looking for a quick and hassle-free source of vintage-style synth sounds will probably find some inspiration in SampleScience’s latest release. Despite not featuring samples of an actual vintage hardware synthesizer, Oberom does indeed include a cool set of synth sounds.

One cool benefit of sample-based instruments like this one is that the CPU hit is almost non-existent. This is due to the fact that all sounds are streamed directly from the hard drive. Hence, Oberom is the perfect fit for users with less modern computers.

If you happen to like this type of rompler instrument, be sure to check out the other freebies offered by SampleScience. They’ve recently released SQ8ROM, a freeware plugin featuring the sounds of SQ8L which is another discontinued virtual synthesizer. This one is more suitable for genres like synthwave and vaporwave.

The plugin can be downloaded completely free of charge from the developer’s website. Registration is not required. Simply extract the downloaded ZIP archive and run the plugin in your DAW application of choice.

Oberom is available for free download via SampleScience (337 MB download size, ZIP archive, 32-bit & 64-bit VST/AU plugin format for Windows & MacOS).

  1. Love it! Sample Science makes some great plugs. Simple, attractive, and sound great. As I used to love Oberon years ago, so it’s cool to have a 64-bit VSTi with the Oberon sound!

I’m loving their new freeware romplers. The one based on SQ8L was top-notch, too. You should also check out our collab with SampleScience on 99Sounds.

      • Do you know if SampleScience is going to release a sequel to their Sample Science Player anytime soon? I absolutely adored using their VST for my music projects last year!
