AudioThing has announced the release of Blindfold EQ, a freeware four-band equalizer in VST, VST3, AU, and AAX plugin formats for digital audio workstations on PC and Mac.
Blindfold EQ is a fairly standard analog-style four-band parametric equalizer plugin with a built-in soft clipper circuit. The feature that makes Blindfold EQ stand out is the lack of labels and measurement values underneath the on-screen control parameters. The interface was designed in a way that forces the producer to use their ears while mixing, rather than following the numeric values on the screen. It’s like using a blindfold while equalizing a track with a normal EQ plugin… or not. I mean, you’d probably end up clicking all sorts of random crap on the screen if you were actually blindfolded. But still, the plugin’s name does make sense.
Taking a closer look at the interface, Blindfold EQ features four bands, each with bypass, gain level, and frequency controls. The two middle bands (LMF and HMF) also feature a Q control. The output stage features a master volume control and two switches. These are used to turn the soft clipping and analog saturation circuits on or off. At the top of the interface, you’ll find the preset manager, the preset randomizer, and the global bypass switch. The interface can be set to any size by clicking and dragging the bottom-right corner.
While using Blindfold EQ for a short demo session, it quickly became apparent how much I rely on my trusty PreSonus Pro EQ plugin and its built-in spectrum analyzer while mixing. Equalizing a track without any visual guides was tricky at first, but it forced me to focus on finding the trouble frequencies by ear. It also made me more concentrated while mixing. Using a tool like this should, in the long run, help train your ears and improve your mixing skills.
