Free Multi-Sampled Double Bass Released By Drogomir Smolken (SFZ)

Drogomir Smolken has released a free sample pack, featuring high quality multi-samples of a double bass (aka contrabass) and SFZ mappings.

I have sampled my double bass for my own use, and want to share it. The samples add up to 252 MB and have SFZ mappings. There’s pizz and arco plus quite a few squeaking, scratching and thumping noises.

The samples are available for free download at the official download page (253 MB download size, ZIP archive, contains 120 audio samples in 24-bit WAV format).

The samples were originally created for personal use, but Drogomir has decided to share them with the rest of the world for free. Big kudos to Drogomir for doing that, since there really aren’t many free double bass sample libraries out there (if any).

The included samples sound great and the instrument has been sampled quite thoroughly. There are 5 velocity layers with 2 round robin layers for each bowed note, and 3 velocity layers with 3-4 round robin variations for each pizzicato note. The pack also contains various noises created with the instrument.

Best of all, the pack includes SFZ mappings which means that everyone can use these samples right away (I recommend Zampler and sforzando  as the best freeware plugins for playing SFZ sample libraries). The samples are free to use and can be re-used in other sample libraries. Read more about the terms of use on the official download page linked above. Many thanks to Drogomir for releasing these samples for free! Great stuff!

  1. SFZ is the format of the future – especially for those with an open-source / creative commons /non-commercial approach. I’m really happy that we have a sophisticated SFZ-player now with Sforzando (which is also Freeware!!!) and that we have enthusiastic people in the community, who develop new sfz-libraries for all of us.
