Aegean Music has released Pitchproof, a freeware harmonizer and pitch-shifter effect in VST plugin format for Windows based computers.
Pitchproof is an audio plug-in that can shift the pitch of the input. The effect is meant to combine old styles of pitch shifting with the quality you expect from modern plug-ins. The result is this pitch “pedal” simulation that has most of what is great about guitar harmonizer pedals, and still preserves the signal’s integrity.
Pitchproof is available for free download via Aegean Music (1.4 MB download size, ZIP archive, available in 32-bit & 64-bit VST plugin format for Windows).
This freeware effect works as a classic harmonizer guitar pedal, offering a cleaner modern sound in software form. Capable of operating both as a harmonizer effect and a standard pitch shifter (when the output is set to 100% wet), this is a great piece of freeware to add to any guitarist’s software collection. Before we get to the list of features, it’s worth noting that the developers have posted a neat little overview of possible harmonies on the page linked above. It’s a good idea to use it as a guide while experimenting with the plugin.
Pitchshifter offers a range of one octave up or down, as well as a neat Key setting for defining the range of notes which will be played. The Detune setting can be used to add subtle pitch variations to the audio signal on the output, resulting in a more natural sounding harmony. Another cool feature is the option to preserve the transients of the original audio signal. Finally, the effect also includes a simple guitar tuner utility. The tuner was actually a very logical addition, since the plugin already detects the pitch of incoming audio.

onWorks very well and sounds realistic! Small delay but not very noticeable even when playing fast riffs. Saves me from constantly retuning guitars.

onIn another demo video, Aegean Music shows how to configure midi control of Pitchproof in Reaper, but when I try to do the same setup in Reaper on my own computer, the midi control doesn’t work. Has anyone managed to get midi control working?

The one thing though is that it makes vocal harmonies sound pretty chipmunk-y.
