Sebastian Rettinghaus has released Unek Melowdysign Drumsamples, a free collection of drum sounds which were made with the Take iOS app by Propellerhead Software.
The information on the download page is a bit scarce (and written in German), so we asked Sebastian to tell us a bit more about his free sample pack and how these samples were made. Here’s how he describes the sound design process which went into creating Unek Melowdysign Drumsamples:
To create these samples, I used my iPhone with the Take app by Propellerhead Software and I recorded various ideas at my work and on the way to work. I recorded the sounds of different objects such as a hatchet, knives and so on. I’ve sampled pretty much anything that makes a cool sound. Also, the 808 style bass sounds were created with NI Razor and NI Massive.
Then I took those recordings and imported them into Cubase, which I use to choose the best sounding takes and turn them into one shot samples. Those sounds were used as the base samples, however I also wanted to have some low frequency content, so I used the following three techniques to achieve a solid low end:
- Pitching down the samples by two octaves, cutting off all frequency content above 80 Hz and layering the resulting sound on top of the original sample.
- Using bx_boom! by Brainworx to get a fat low end.
- Lots of EQ!
In the next step, I used the Envelope Shaper in Cubase, SPL Transient Designer and the Attacker in order to add some punch to the sounds. Finally, I used the Steinberg REVerence reverb effect to get a nice room sound and the Native Instruments Replika delay effect, along with some additional EQ work.
The pack contains a set of beatbox style drum samples and some synthesized drum hits and bass sounds. Sebastian has also included several drum loops which were made using the one shot samples provided in the pack.
