Many of my friends had toy synths when they were kids and I’ve actually never had one. Not even a cheap chinese model. Can you imagine how happy I was when I got this little 80′s Casio a few days ago?
Well anyway, the same moment I heard its lovely lo-fi sounds, I new I had to record them and make a new sample pack.
At first my intention was to only record the drum samples, but later i decided to also make a soundfont with my favorite Casio SA-10 instruments. As a bonus, i recorded all the rhythms, the demo song, and the so called “Super Accompaniment” loops, and included all of those in the sample pack too. So what you get here is an experience similar to owning a real Casio SA-10.
While the samples were recorded perfectly from the Casio SA-10, don’t expect any audiophile-quality sounds here. These samples are cheap, dirty, and noisy, and they are meant to be so. You may use them just for fun if you want, but some of them can be very useful in music production, especially in the situations where you might find yourself in need of some lo-fi pianos and such. Instead of adding bitcrushing effects to some high quality samples, you might want to use some of these ready and authentically lo-fi samples. I especially like the electric piano, almost fell in love with it.
No fx has been added to the samples, to keep them as authentic as possible. Even the instrument names in the soundfont have been written with Caps Lock on – they’re written like that on the Casio SA-10.
Note that the original keyboard has the range of keys from F1 to C4. I used the same layout in the soundfont.
UPDATE: The sample pack has been updated with the new version of the soundfont that has twelve instruments instead of nine, and also some loop points fixed. If you already have the 9 instrument version on your computer, you might want to download the sample pack again. Loop points were fixed in the SYNTH-LEAD instrument. The new instruments that have been added are: POP LEAD, SYNTH-ACCORDION and FLUTE.

MediaFire keeps giving me an error, so I switched over to your C64 sample pack & it worked just fine… Just thought you should know.
fixed that now. there was a short downtime for the file, as i was making an update. thanks for letting me know anyway. enjoy!
Thank you for providing these samples! I have a heart for them because I used to have a Concertmate 460 I bought at Radio Shack — it’s the same machine, I reckon, because I recognize nearly all the sounds you provided. :D But what happened to the closed high-hat? Thank you also for taking the time to create a SoundFont with some sounds like the “grand” piano and the metal guitar!
P.S. I sampled that keyboard I used to have but the sound quality isn’t as good… ;)
Very nice! Thanks for these.
Awesome….thanks!
I’m finding that Logic’s EXS24 sampler shows the Soundfont as empty when I open it, though the file itself is 24mb or so in size.
Assuming this isn’t just me being stupid in some way and is a problem intrinsic to Logic/OSX, is there any chance you could post the component sample files as well?
Thanks for the free samples!
@junai
thanx for reporting that! check your email.
@everyone
if you have any similar problems with the sf2 or any of the samples, please report and i will try to help out. :]
It says that the WinRAR archive is broken. Weird. I can’t extract the files.
I own the synth. in question, it’s a real nostaliga trip to play with. I heard a loop off it the other day on TV. Pretty cool. Also, a successful band named ‘People In Planes’ have a song with the ‘metal guitar’ sound on it. It’s called’Last Man Standing’, check it out.
Nevermind. I tried downloading a couple more times, and I got it to work the third time. Pretty illogical if you ask me. Anyway, you can delete my comments now if you wish, as they serve no purpose.
nah, comments are always good ;]
glad you got it working!
thanks a lot! this is great!
Awesome! Thanx for that!

Hi,
This sample kit is awesome, I had the casio in my childhood !
That’s so much fun to recover it although I was a bit desapointed about the lack of the whole soundset in the soundfont pack … I loved one sound in particular, the “cosmic sound” which is missing :)
thank you so much bedroom producers.
cheers
Curtis
thanks for the kind words! yes, having a full featured soundfont would rock, but it would take quite a while to make… it took me a week or so to get the current version of the soundfont running properly, without nasty cracks and such, and plus i’m sharing these samples for free. anyway, i’m working on some new samples, so while i’m at it i will probably update the casio sa-10 pack with some new sounds and possibly other formats. if i do that, you can count on the cosmic sound being incuded. ;]
Nice sample pack!! Thanks!!
Where can I find sample pack #1?
glad you like it.
here’s #1:

That drumpack is fine as well. But your Casio fonts are great at all!
Great great great!
I found it too long. There’s no organ sound in pack so it’s little sad.
Anyway you’re just magic, thanks so much!
Good luck and happy new year!
you guys may appreciate this casio sa-7 song:

nice! if you feel like making some tunes with the soundfont, we can feature them on this page.
Hey! Thanks for the great samples! Unfortunately I can’t manage to get the SoundFont working on Garageband :(, followed many tutorials and tried using this thing called bs-0 but I can’t seem to get any sound out of it.
Any ideas? :D
hey, i’m not a mac guy unfortunately so i can’t be of much help here. :[
from what i’ve heard, all macs have some sort of a native plugin that can be loaded into hosts that support AU, but i’m not sure if Garageband is one of those. perhaps you should try converting the soundfont to some other format using Translator Free by the Chicken Systems Inc.
Thanks for sounds. The casio’s wwere classics in the day. For any one using Logic I just uploaded a simple EXS file that maps out the kits to the keys. You still need to download the wav files here on the bedroomproducersblog.com website.
Download the EXS Files

thank you very much for the mappings, DrumsAndSounds! i will add them to the post with a link to your website.
Hi!
I looked for the Church organ sample (demo – http://drwind.net/share/organ_casio_SA-21.mp3) but I have not found anywhere.
The most of sample packages don’t contain the sample.
Please advise where can I find it.
not sure if you can find them anywhere, but i can make some for you if you need them.
It would be fine! I really need this sample because I’d like to remix my old song.
I searched Casio keyboards and played them in music shop, however new Casio model has another Church organ sound.
ok, here are the sa-10 pipe organ samples. it’s a 5Mb wav file, i hope you don’t mind splitting the individual notes yourself:

enjoy! :]
That’s great!!!! :)
I’ll attach this sample to track tonight and will check.
Thank you very much!
I am actually working on building a VSTi of a casio SA-38 (with sampled sounds) in max/msp 4.6 and pluggo right now for my senior project. it’s good to see a strong userbase and interest in these awesome old synths
that’s great, i’m really looking forward to another Casio VST. please send me a note when you release it!
umm.. link is down?…. would love to experience these samps! but cant DL… :(

Thanks! I just rediscovered my Casio SA-10 and when played the demo song it touched something inside of my memories… Did a search for it and found your blog!
cheers. :D
Hey, I’m looking for the strings sample of the Casio SA-10, but I can’t find it anywhere!
It would be great if you can upload this sample. I’m new producing some covers from my bedbroom, and simply I’cant find a sound like the sa-10. Is the whole sample pack of sa-10 available in any site?
Thank you a lot
D
Longshot but tried this a few times and can’t decompress the zip once it’s downloaded…would love to use this if it’s still available?
Thanks
hi Ben, i’ve re-downloaded the pack and it works fine here! please try to download it again – if it doesn’t work again, i’ll upload a RAR version for you.
:D :D :D i remember all the sounds from the demosong… awesome!! I’ve got another model but the sounds, i remember!!
only mine power input isn’t working, battery’s also not… :(
hey, i’m sure you can find a used Casio for dirty cheap in the ads. i got my SA-10 from some people who put it in the ads for like €3! :)
