MuTools has released a test version (free for a limited time) of MUX, an upcoming modular host/effect/instrument in VST plugin format for Windows.

The MUX is the heart of MuLab. It’s a modular synth and effect plug-in with which you can build a vast range of sounds and FX.

The time-limited test version of MUX is available for free download via MuTools (you’ll find the link in the 9th post on that page). Only a Windows VST version is available for now, but the developer has announced that a Mac version should also become available some time after the official release.

MuLab Free was the first program I ever used for music production, and I’m very excited to see that MUX (the coolest part of MuLab!) is finally shaping up to become a standalone product.

If you’re new to MuLab, here’s a short explanation. MUX is a modular environment in which you can combine various built-in elements with 3rd party VST plugins. Basically, you get control over a virtual room in which you can connect all your favorite VST instruments and effects and use them to build crazy modular FX and instrument chains. Now that MUX is available as a VST plugin, you should be able to do this sort of stuff in any VST host!

If you give this interesting plugin a try, please consider reporting any bugs and incompatibility issues in the MuTools forum. Jo Langie is one of the coolest developers out there and deserves all the support he can get!
