Badass by DCSI.
Diego Callegari (aka DCSI) has released Badass, a free sample library (Facebook account required for download) for Native Instrument Kontakt featuring the sounds of an “old school bass synth”.
Wrapped in a 30 MB instrument size it’s a sampled and edited old school bass synth, spread across 3 octaves, coming with some optional gritty flavour added by using the modwheel of your controller, plus a delay effect and several play modes.
Badass is available for free download via Diego Callegari’s website (23.05 MB download size, ZIP archive, contains 1 instrument in NKI file format for NI Kontakt).

The instrument is based on samples of an old bass synthesizer. Three octaves of the original instrument have been sampled (including round robin samples), however I couldn’t find out which instrument was used as the sound source. The instrument also features several playback modes, as well as a set of built in effects.
Individual samples in WAV format are not included, meaning that you’ll need the full version of NI Kontakt in order to use the instrument without limitations. A user manual in PDF format is also included in the download pack.
On a related notes, Diego Callegari has recently released a set of free loops which were distributed in two separate loop collections. DCSI Closet Loops Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 are available for free download on the DCSI website. They contain a collection of audio loops in 16-bit WAV format which were selected from various audio projects and music tracks by Diego Callegari.
