ATTACK808 is a free drum sample pack by Plughugger, featuring the sounds of the Waldorf Rack Attack which were sampled from the Akai S950 hardware sampler unit.
The pack contains 24 individual Waldorf Rack Attack drum samples, whereas each sample comes with four variations (clean, normal, dirty and hot). This would bring the total number of included samples to 96, however Plughugger has also provided 16-bit and 24-bit versions of each sound so the total number of samples in the pack is 192. The processed versions of the sounds were sampled from the Akai S950 hardware sampler at different gain and sampling rate settings, resulting in some great sounding dirty drum hits with a nice vintage sampler style lo-fi character.
The clean Waldorf Rack Attack drum samples were recorded through the RME Babyface audio interface into a MacBook and they mimic the sound of the Roland TR-808 drum machine, although with a considerably different flavor. The samples cover a wide range of standard electronic drum sounds, including some awesome punchy bass drums with long decays and crispy 808 style snares. You’ll notice that percussion hits and cymbals sound much grittier than the sounds you’d get from a real TR-808.
Things get even more gritty once you dig into the folders containing the samples which were sampled from the Akai S950. If saturated lo-fi drums with tons of character are your kind of thing, you absolutely must not miss this free offering from Plughugger (however don’t miss our free Cassette 606 and Cassette 909 sample packs either!). The samples included in the “01 Akai S950 Normal” are my favorite part of the ATTACK808 sample pack, perfectly nailing that vintage sampler sound character without sounding too distorted and messed up.
Plughugger has also included a set of drum kit presets for FXpansion Geist users. Each of the four variations comes with its own Geist kit, so you’ll be able to load up these samples in no time if you’re a proud owner of FXpansion’s flagship drum sampler instrument.
