Transient is a freeware transient shaper effect in VST/AU plugin format for Windows and Mac OS X compatible digital audio workstations. The plugin was developed by Audio Assault.
The plugin aims to be a quick and easy utility for increasing (or lowering) the attack and sustain of the processed audio signal. Transient shaper effects are often used for adding a bit of punch and/or body to drum sounds, but you can also use them to process other elements of the mix such as acoustic guitars, bass guitars, etc. I sometimes like to use a transient shaper to soften the attack of a recorded bass guitar, so that it blends better with the kick drum.

Audio Assault has done a very good job with this freeware transient shaper, making a handy and reliable tool for quick transient fixes. Apart from the standard ATTACK and SUSTAIN knobs, the plugin also offers a X2 switch (which doubles the intensity of the effect) and a CLIP switch witch is used to turn soft clipping on or off. The plugin is extremely easy to use and at the same time it can give some very good results.
On a related note, this extremely talented developer has recently released FilterCrusher, a fantastic dual tube filter effect which is available for free download exclusively on BPB. It’s a great little tool for adding a bit of mojo and color to your sounds, as well as for cleaning up the low end and leaving more room for the main bass elements of your mix.
Another brilliant transient shaper freebie which I’d like to mention is Transient by Sleepy-Time DSP. This freeware plugin offers a bit more control over the transient shaping process by allowing the user to define a specific frequency range in which the transients will be detected. This way, the effect can be applied to certain elements of a recording, without affecting the rest of the processed audio track.
Transient is available for free download via Audio Assault (1.5 MB download size, EXE installer, 32-bit & 64-bit VST/AU plugin format for Windows & Mac).
