VirHarmonic has introduced Cello Freebie, a free cello multi-sample library for the freeware UVI Workstation virtual sample player instrument (no iLok dongle required).
Cello Freebie is VirHarmonic’s second free UVI Workstation library, following the excellent Violin Freebie which was released a couple of years ago. The new library features a set of 1,372 cello multi-samples (96 kHz, 24-bit quality), with multiple articulations (pizzicato and spiccato), four velocity layers and four round robins per note. VirHarmonic have labeled it a Micro Library, as it is based on a selection of samples from their commercial Bohemian Cello collection, however there’s really nothing “micro” about it (especially if you consider the price). The included samples sound very good out of the box and there’s hardly any additional processing required in order to get a great cello sound with this library.
The only real drawback here is that a free iLok user account is required in order to run UVI Workstation on your machine. Although iLok accounts come completely free of charge nowadays (the USB dongle is not required in this case), you will need to install PACE drivers on your computer, and I know that some users definitely won’t like this. I don’t worry about iLok software too much myself, but the fact is that the more licensing software you have installed on your computer, the more processes will run in the background and potentially have a negative impact on the overall performance of your system.
After adding Cello Freebie to your shopping cart on the product page linked below, proceed to free checkout and complete the free user registration process on VirHarmonic’s website. The download will appear in your user account as soon as you complete the free checkout. After that, download the UFS file and proceed to install UVI Workstation if you don’t have it installed on your machine already. You will also need a free iLok user account in order to activate your UVI Workstation installation, as explained above.

onNo WAVs or AIFFs inside, unfortunately. Just a file that you load in UVI Workstation.

onNo reason not to have the free UVI player and this is much more flexible than WAVs and AIFFs anyway.
