GŌN Is A FREE Goniometer Audio Visualization Plugin By MAAT Digital

2

MAAT Digital has released GŌN, a freeware goniometer in VST, VST3, AU, and AAX plugin formats for compatible DAW software on PC and Mac.

GŌN is a lightweight goniometer (also described as a “phase scope”) plugin. Its primary purpose is phase visualization. The plugin includes a handy “out–of–phase warning” feature that will inform the user if the monitored signal has phasing issues.

The developers tried to emulate an analog oscilloscope as closely as possible while keeping the plugin version non-complex from the UX perspective. GŌN does offer some customization options, but the audio analysis work is done automatically and immediately presented to the user.

As for the customization options, the user can adjust the monitoring gain, focus, and the drawing style in the preferences menu. These preferences can be stored as the global default preset for later use. From what I’ve seen, though, the user can not save multiple custom presets for different audio types, which would be an excellent workflow enhancement if GŌN is used in numerous projects. Another nice feature is the auto-gain option that will automatically “normalize” the waveform for signals with a broader amplitude range.

The interface is clean, freely resizable, and well-designed overall. There aren’t any buttons, apart from the gear icon, which calls up the preferences menu. The real-time phase display dominates the plugin’s UI, and you can totally move GŌN to the corner of the screen while tweaking other plugins or controls in your DAW. All things considered, GŌN is a neat little utility that you can occasionally monitor to prevent any severe phase issues while working on a mix.

This is the second freeware mix utility coming from MAAT Digital, following its popular 2BusControl plugin which was released back in 2017. Be sure to check out 2BusControl if you’re looking for a stereo correlation meter to use in tandem with GŌN’s phase monitoring capabilities.

GŌN is available for direct free download from the MAAT Digital website. When installing the software, you will be asked to submit your name and email address. Once your email is submitted, you will be asked to subscribe to the MAAT Digital newsletter, although this step is completely optional.

The software is available in VST, VST3, AU, and AAX plugin formats for all compatible hosts on PC and Mac. Both 32-bit and 64-bit digital audio workstations are supported
