Selena string machine by B.Serrano.

B.Serrano has released Selena, a freeware string machine instrument in VSTi plugin format for Windows. The instrument is based on the previously released Horus synthesizer.

Selena is a downsized version Horus, focused on the strings-machine aspect.

This is a bread and butter string machine instrument, based on the more advanced Horus synthesizer which was released a month ago. Selena focuses on the string machine elements from Horus, featuring a simpler user interface and a reduced feature set.

The plugin features two string oscillators, with an added effects section. The effects section features phaser, delay and chorus effect modules. Selena comes with 32 voices of polyphony and the notes are spread across the stereo field, from left to right.

If you’re looking for similar instruments, you’ll find several good alternatives in our dedicated string machine round-up article. Another great choice is Nabla by Full Bucket Music. It’s my favorite freeware string machine instrument so far, based on the Korg Delta hardware synthesizer. It’s a pretty decent emulation of the hardware instrument and is currently my go-to virtual instrument for string ensemble sounds.

Selena is available for free download via B.Serrano’s website (1.79 MB download size, ZIP archive, 32-bit VST plugin format for Windows).
