Expressive Tron – Free NI Kontakt Instrument Library Released By Tronsonic

Tronsonic has released Expressive Tron, a completely free tape processed Mellotron M400 sample library for Native Instruments Kontakt.

Four enhanced tape banks from the legendary M400 Mellotron, in microtape plus format. Do not expect pristine tron samples – these are very degraded, for ‘character’ based sound design.

Unlike most free Mellotron sound libraries out there, this one comes with a great NI Kontakt user interface featuring loads of sound manipulation controls and built-in effects. Adding to that, the sound of the original instrument were recorded to to a worn out audio tape before being sampled to digital format. Think about that! A tape based instrument such as the Mellotron was sampled to tape. Yummy!

The library is based on multi-samples of four different Mellotron presets. Inside the Experssive Tron download pack, you’ll find cello, flute, male choir, and string samples. An additional folder contains multi patches for Kontakt. Although this definitely isn’t the cleanest Mellotron sample library out there, it has tons of lo-fi character and I’m sure that you’ll have fun using it if you’re a fan of this vintage instrument.

Although the library was designed for use with NI Kontakt, the Tronsonic sound design team has been kind enough to also include individual samples in WAV format. You can grab these WAV files and load them up into any sample out there, in case you’re not a Kontakt user.

The library is offered as a freebie download directly from the sound designer’s website. There’s no need to register or submit your email address. Simply click the large Expressive Tron screenshot on the download page to get your free copy of the sound library.

  1. Hi, I was wondering how I can use these in Garageband – if I don’t have Kontakt so is there any way to use this as an instrument since there is no au or vst plugin only .wav? Thanks in advance.
