Karoryfer has announced the release of Fashion Bass, the latest addition to their brilliant series of free bass guitar instrument libraries in SFZ format.
I’ve made a library of another one of my basses, this one more general-purpose and a little bigger than the previous ones. I went to great lengths to get my hands on this particular bass, though that’s because it looks totally awesome, more so than because of its unique tonal qualities or anything like that.
If you read BPB regularly, you probably already know that I’m a huge fan of Drogomir Smolken’s (aka Karoryfer) bass sample libraries. He has brought us three fantastic freebies already, including a nice electric bass and a fantastic double bass sample pack. His latest release is another electric bass guitar sample collection, utilizing some interesting SFZ tricks to take that classic bass guitar sound to a higher level.
The library features 426 individual bass samples in 24-bit WAV format, with three round robins and five velocity layers per note. The bass guitar was downtuned to CGDA and the low E (or C in this case) string has also been sampled at A and F#. On top of all this, the library also features release and noise samples, all with round robin variations. The included samples are raw, with no additional processing apart from noise reduction.
The mappings are where this library really shines, in my opinion. The SFZ format is absolutely free to use, so this library can be used by everyone (grab sforzando if you need a free SFZ player). The four provided SFZ mappings range from the ultra realistic default mapping which contains all the note variations along with release and noise samples, to the very interesting EDM inspired mapping which layers all round robin variations on top of each other in order to achieve a fatter tone. The end result sounds great and you should definitely check out that fourth mapping if you need a synthetic/natural combo bass sound for your tunes.
