If you’re unfamiliar with exactly what “vari-mu” entails, it’s a reference to how these original hardware units worked. “Mu” is how gain is referred to in the “tube world,” and a vari-mu compressor has a dynamically variable ratio. With the Tuco plugin, the tube emulation isn’t just used for adding color to your sound, but is also responsible for the gain reduction, just like real vari-mu compressors.
Let’s get this out of the way first: Tuco sounds fantastic. It works particularly great on vocals and drums and would be a solid choice when mixing and tracking. The plugin’s interface is elegant and straightforward, with everything you would need right there in front of you.

Tuco is also remarkably versatile: modes 1 & 2 function as a fast attack and slow attack compressor, respectively, while modes 3 & 4 are a fast and slow limiter. There’s an A/B switch for comparing two different settings, a mix control that works both before and after your output signal for parallel compression, output saturation using the “drive” knob. If, like me, you’re an adult who pays taxes and cooks his own food, you won’t even glance at a compressor with no Auto Makeup Gain, which I’m happy to say this one has.
Tuco might look simple on the surface, but it’s a great-sounding and authentically vintage-like compressor that can easily slot into your collection. If you don’t have anything outside of your DAW’s stock plugins and are looking to branch out – this is one of the best options. And if you already own a few compressor plugins, it might be a good idea to add a vari-mu compressor to your arsenal.
