For a limited time, you can get the Lite version of the flagship Halo 2 softsynth (usually £19) by DHPlugins for free.
This isn’t the first time we’ve come across a free offer on HALO 2 Lite, but if you’ve missed it in the past, now you’ve no excuses to skip it again.
While being limited in terms of features and controls compared to the full version, Halo 2 Lite is a very capable hybrid synth with a unique approach combining sampling and synthesis.
Mainly designed for bass music heads, it’s a hybrid ROMpler and synthesizer.
At the core, it comes with three sound-generating modules: Sample, Sub, and Synth.

The Sample module is the most interesting since it gives you access to controls usually found in a dedicated sampler, like looping functions, reverse, sample FM, pitch, detune, and more.
The Lite version features 19 samples to get you started, but unfortunately, the user sample import feature is unavailable.
The Synth module has classic waveforms like Sawtooth, Square, and Noise. Interestingly, you can filter them from the oscillator section before the proper filtering stage.
Being focused on producing monstrous Reese basses, heavy leads, and huge pads, Halo 2 Lite is unsurprisingly greatly packed in terms of distortion, filtering, and modulation controls.
Another section that sound designers will appreciate is the dedicated Pitch Enveloper, found at the bottom-left corner of the interface.
If you click on the panel, further controls appear at the center of the plugin for more customization possibilities.
Indeed, hoover sounds are a staple in Drum&Bass, and a pitch envelope is a core ingredient to producing.
The Filters panel features three independent multi-mode filters among the choices of LPF, Notch, HPF, Peak, BP, and Phase. Each of them has its own LFO section to get things moving.
You can also visually see a representation of each filter and its respective movement.
And if three filters weren’t enough, you can also exploit a Post Filter after the Distortion section.
The FX panel is loaded with Reverb, Delay, Phaser, and Chorus effects.
What I love about the plugin interface design is that only the most important parameters are displayed in each section, while the advanced ones are found in the central panel.
Halo 2 Lite is overall a super powerful synth, and there are plenty more features to be discovered.
