Bedroom Producers Blog is proud to release BPB Bassaturator, a freeware bass booster plugin for Windows and macOS.
BPB Bassaturator is a free VST plugin for bass processing. It uses a push-pull style equalizer and three different saturation types to turn boring bass sounds into fat basslines that cut through a mix.
We designed BPB Saturator to be easy to use, with just a few controls that will help you drastically improve your bass. Let’s quickly go through the main parameters.
Sub Controls
The “Sub” section lets you select the target frequency and make it louder with the Boost knob. At the same time, the EQ curve will attenuate the surrounding frequencies, bringing more clarity to the boosted area of the low-end.
So, instead of just increasing the volume, BPB Bassaturator enhances and focuses the low-end frequencies by removing some of the surrounding frequencies. This works particularly well on kick drums and helps make basslines sit better in a mix.
The inspiration for this came from the Pultec EQ push-pull technique, which involves simultaneously boosting and attenuating frequencies in overlapping ranges, typically in the low end.
Bass Controls
In the “Bass” section, you can apply three different types of saturation, adjust the tone, and mix the wet signal for easy parallel processing.
The three saturation modes (Dirt, Body, and Tape) will transform almost any boring bass sound into something much more exciting. It might sound like an empty promise, but just give it a try, and I’m sure you’ll be surprised by the results.
Here’s a quick explanation of the three saturation modes:
- The Dirt knob applies our signature distortion from plugins like BPB Dirty Filter and BPB Dirty LA. It adds “dirt” to the signal and makes it cut through the mix.
- The Body knob adds clarity to the bass sound and saturates the mids. It’s perfect for adding power to a bass guitar and for tightening a flat synth bass.
- The Tape saturation mode rounds up the sound and makes it more present. It also works great on a bus channel.
Once you’re happy with the saturation, remove the excess highs with the low-pass filter and blend in some of the dry signal until you’re happy with the sound.
BPB Bassaturator Tips
I recommend starting with a subtle sub-bass boost around 50-80 Hz, depending on the characteristics of the processed signal. This will make the subs louder and more focused.
Then, adjust the Body parameter until there’s enough clarity in the mids. I usually boost to around 70%, but this depends on the source signal.
After that, add the Dirt and Tape saturator to taste. Dirt tends to work better on bass guitar, and I just love how Tape sounds on synth bass.
Lastly, use the filter to tame the high-end frequencies and use the Mix knob to balance the signal. If you’re going for an over-the-top distorted bass sound, boost everything to 100% and then reduce the Mix value until you’re happy with the output.
Additional Features
The plugin features a freely resizable GUI. You can adjust the size by clicking and dragging the bottom-right corner of the interface.
You can also bypass the processing using the On/Off switch in the upper-right corner.
BPB Bassaturator is available as a VST3 and AU plugin for Windows and macOS (with native M1 support).

onThank you so much. Just got MAutoDynamicEq using the info provided :)

onI think BPB needs a “General Comments” section 😄
Would be way more efficient than stumbling onto some other deal because one read the comments on an unrelated plugin.
Just sayin’ 🤘
M
onI agree with that, Michael!

onThank you! Wonderful job as always!
By the way, I see a mail that VSTBuzz is coming back under new management. Lets see if they stay on business much longer.
Lucas
onThey were actually in business for some years before they shut down; I actually liked the guy(s?) running it previously, as they were always helpful and quick to respond if I had any questions or concerns. Hopefully the grand re-opening will be under equally friendly management.

onWow, just Wow!
This looks extremely exciting!
I’m going to test drive it asap! I have tried some of the bass booster plugins that are available and found that none of them could compete with the OG: Waves Renaissance Bass.
I’m very curious about BPB Bassaturator’s approach to enhancing bass!

onHeyhey!! Free stuff from BPB!! And it’s saturation-related no less!! Gracias!!
(Huh… I don’t speak Spanish, not really, but that seemed more appropriate for some reason… I think “gracias” must just sounds less grating and quack-y to me than “thanks.” XD )

onWill it work on Win7
mrg
onAFAIK, nope. It needs a function in Direct3D for Win8.1 and above (CreateDXGIFactory2).
Another incentive for me to upgrade, I’ll eventually do it. So, thanks in advance Tomi, anyway. :D

onBig thanks for this awesome plugin!
Bthelick
onIncredibly useful, especially on bass guitar which is usually 1st harmonic dominant instead of sub.
My only wish is it that it had a global output level control
Tomi
onThank you, gonna test it out right away! 😉

onHello? What’s going on? Why are there no new articles what so ever? I’m beginning to think there is something wrong on my end perhaps or i don’t know what.
Been a week almost that the blog changed back to this article on top, while there were several ones after this one already, it’s weird, no?
Tomislav? You alright? Hope all is okay and it’s just the final stages and urks of the new comment section ˘J˘
Tomislav Zlatic
onHey Lars, thanks for asking! All good. I needed a short break after Black Friday to avoid burnout and recharge my mental batteries. I’m back in the office as of today and BPB is continuing the work full steam ahead! :)
