LVC-Audio has released PhreePhuzz, a simple and easy to use freeware saturation effect in VST/AU plugin format for Windows and Mac.

PhreePhuzz is an analog saturation simulator designed for subtle saturation. It has a very simple interface and four distinct saturation types.

PhreePhuzz is available for free download via LVC-Audio (2.0 MB download size, ZIP archive, available in 32-bit & 64-bit VST/VST3/AU plugin format for Windows & Mac).

The plugin is available for instant download and doesn’t require registering on the developer’s website. Please note that the plugin is currently in beta state, although it will remain free even after a stable version is released. LVC-Audio is open for suggestions and bug reports.

PhreePhuzz may look like a very simple saturation effect, however most of its sound is based on the algorithms taken from the commercial PreAMPed saturation workhorse unit by the same developer. The idea was to offer a plugin with a simple workflow and a limited amount of control, while achieving good saturation results. The plugin offers four different types of saturation and features 4X oversampling which reduces the aliasing effects of saturation.

While the PhreePhuzz can easily be pushed into obvious distortion, the developer suggests that it works best for subtle saturation effects. Different saturation modes can be used to saturate different parts of the frequency spectrum, so the plugin can work well on a variety of audio sources. It’s very cool that the developer has also included a user manual in the download pack, so getting to grips with this neat freeware saturation effect should be a matter of minutes.

If you’re looking for more saturation effects, you should definitely take a look at our in-depth overview of the currently available freeware. My personal picks from this category would be FerricTDS by Variety Of Sound and Tube Amp by Voxengo.
