Hollow Sun offers the Freepacks series, a collection of 11 free sample libraries for Native Instruments Kontakt.
Our Freepacks are very popular but a bit dull – just (for the most part) sample replay things. Well, with the exception of the BassStation and Novachord FreePacks, both of which have a fair degree of functionality, we’ve updated the FreePacks with a very comprehensive GUI that offers a lot of versatility.
All eleven sample libraries now feature custom interfaces, basic synthesis controls, and an effects section. Before the update, only Bass Station and Novachord packs had custom interfaces.
These are great sample libraries and are must-haves for Kontakt users, especially because they’re free. My favorite is the Bass Station, which features 90 multi-sampled patches from this analog synthesizer.
About Hollow Sun
Hollow Sun was a boutique sample library company founded by Stephen Howell.
The company is known for creating high-quality, unique sound libraries that sample vintage and obscure electronic instruments. Hollow Sun focused on niche markets, providing virtual instruments with vintage sounds that were often hard to find elsewhere.
Some of their most notable products include recreations of vintage synthesizers, drum machines, and other rare electronic instruments, mainly designed for use in NI Kontakt. Hollow Sun earned a reputation for attention to detail, authenticity, and a distinctive, sometimes quirky, aesthetic in their sample libraries.
Sadly, Stephen Howell passed away in 2014, but his work with Hollow Sun left a lasting impact on the sound design and music production community.
Stephen generously released dozens of free Kontakt libraries, either standalone or based on Hollow Sun’s commercial releases.
Despite their age, I highly recommend downloading and playing these old Hollow Sun freebies. They capture the nuances and intricacies of old analog instruments better than most modern libraries.

The old Hollow Sun sample libraries are still available on the official Hollow Sun website. You will need the full version of Native Instruments Kontakt to play the libraries without limitations.
