Versilian Studios has released VS Upright 1, a freeware piano virtual instrument based on a collection of samples of an upright piano and released as a VSTi plugin for Windows and Mac based hosts.
Designed as a light-weight sketching piano, the VS Upright No. 1 is a clean sampling of an upright piano, the standard of homes, small clubs and studios around the world. With a broad dynamic range and a bright, clear tone, the upright can still display a soft side when needed.
VS Upright 1 is available for free download via Versilian Studios (35.8 MB download size, RAR archive, 32-bit & 64-bit VSTi/AUi plugin format for Windows & Mac).
The instrument is described as a lightweight piano plugin for sketching, however I really think it’s much more than just a sketch instrument. Although it comes with only three round robin layers per note, the instrument sounds unusually nice and natural. I liked the fact that the team at Versilian Studios captured really long decays with up to 30 seconds of length.
But that’s not all! Versilian Studios have recently released another cool freebie instrument. The Versilian Studios Chamber Orchestra features a collection of orchestral and wind ensemble instruments sounds, packed in a lovely virtual instrument package. It’s a good starting point for everyone looking to make their first steps with orchestral composition.
Finally, Versilian Studios has also released a commercial Timpani virtual instrument. It is priced at $15 and features over 200 MB worth of timpani sounds.
