HY-Plugins has introduced HY-Reso, a freeware filter bank effect in VST plugin format for Windows based digital audio workstations.
HY-Reso features an array of three resonant band-pass filters that run in parallel. The audio signal on the input passes through each of the three band-pass filters independently, reaching the output mix section where the three filtered signals, as well as the unprocessed signal, can be combined together. Before the signal reaches the output, it can be passed through an optional soft clipper circuit and the “Spread” effect which spreads the output of the three filters across the stereo field.
The cutoff frequencies of the three filters can be modulated by two LFOs and an envelope follower. It’s interesting to note that the second LFO unit is 1.3 times faster than the first LFO. Both are controlled from a single LFO section on the front panel. If you set the main LFO speed to 10 kHz, this means that LFO2 will be running at 13 kHz. The LFO waveforms can be morphed between a sine wave and a square wave, with the additional waveform smoothing parameter.
Similar to what we’ve seen in the previous HY-Plugins release, HY-Reso comes with a modern looking user interface that can be freely resized by dragging the bottom-right edge of the GUI panel. A live waveform display is also included and it can certainly come in handy in some situations (it’s still not possible to zoom in on the waveform, though). The plugin features a dark colored scheme that is easy on the eyes, but I have to admit that I liked the old HY-Plugins design style a tad bit better. The CPU hit is very low, hitting around 2% of available CPU resources for each instance of HY-Reso.
HY-Reso is available for free download via HY-Plugins (1.63 MB download size, ZIP archive, 32-bit & 64-bit VST plugin format for Windows).
