Samples From Mars has released Free 808 From Mars, an 808 drum machine sample pack featuring a handpicked selection of royalty-free sounds from their forthcoming 808 From Mars library.
Free 808 From Mars contains two 808 drum kits. Each kit comes with sixteen samples which were passed through a suite of high-end studio hardware and then recorded through an API 1608 console to a mastering reel to reel. The tone ranges from clean to slightly warmed up and heavily saturated. This is, of course, just a taste of the huge 808 From Mars sample pack which is in the works, but I never say no to a good sounding 808 kit, especially if it’s a free download.

They already have a release called 808 From Mars (you can still find it on their website, actually) which was published a few years ago. The thing is, the updated 808 From Mars library will feature the sounds of a completely different 808 unit which was serviced by an engineer who worked for the manufacturer back in the 80s. He managed to mod the 808 so that the kick offers an impressive four-second long decay. We’re getting one of those long saturated subs in the free version on the pack and it sounds fantastic. I hope that my neighbors are into earth-shattering 808 basslines.
Apart from the new 808 unit, the entire processing chain was upgraded with high-end studio gear. The team at Samples From Mars claims that this will be their best sounding 808 release to date. Judging by the quality of the freebie pack, the hype is real.
